The symposium is organized by the German Maghreb Foundation for Culture and Media (based in Bonn, Germany) on May 29, 2021, with the participation of distinguished intellectuals from the Arab world and Germany, including thinkers, decision makers and experts from multiple academic fields and who are distinguished by diverse intellectual horizons, in addition to influencers in the media. The symposium's title is "The Arab Spring and Change: The Question of the Future?" and the main question that it deals with is: how is our vision to the future for the Arab world after a decade of the outbreak of the Arab Uprisings and the worst pandemic in the modern era?. The symposium will start at 11: 00 am German time (+ 2 H GMT) with an interview with the guest of honour, Dr Moncef Marzouki, the first elected president of Tunisia after the revolution. The interview is an intellectual-political interview moderated by the Egyptian researcher Dr Hoda Salah and the German journalist-writer Jörg Armbruster. The symposium includes two scientific sessions; the first participants focus on exploring prospects for change and the future of democracy in the region, based on an assessment of the Outputs of ten years of the Arab Spring and the implications of the historical change represented in the Covid-19 pandemic, and the effects of the regional and international environment on the paths of transformations in the region. The first session will be chaired by the German journalist Dr Kersten Knipp, and there will be four speakers ; Dr Salam Al-Kawakibi, Director of the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (in Paris), Professor Abdallah Saaf, Former Minister of Education and scientific research and head of the Research Center in Social and Economic Sciences, University of Mohammed V (Rabat), Dr Rainer Hermann, a German expert specializing in Islam issues, and columnist for the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine. Dr Amal Abidi, a professor of political science at Garyounis University in Benghazi, Libya, and currently a professor at Bayreuth University, Germany.
The second session focuses on anticipating the future conditions of the youth, women and social marginalized categories in Arab societies regarding the slogans of the Arab Spring and the repercussion of COVID-19 on the level of social vulnerability. The papers will also discuss the impact of European aid on economic and social reform in the region's countries. The German writer - journalist Martina Sabra will chair this session, with the participation of Professor Ilham Manea (Yemen - Switzerland), a professor of political science at the University of Zurich, Dr Yassin Bakri, professor of political science in Baghdad, Iraq, Dr Christian Hanelt, Senior Expert at the Bertelsmann Foundation, Germany, on the Middle East and North Africa, and the Algerian researcher and journalist Mr Othman Lahyani.
Considering the historical importance of this symposium and the context in which it is held, a scientific committee undertook the preparation of its work in a way that secures a high degree of quality to stimulate dialogue and raise the fundamental issues during the symposium on the one hand, and to publish its outputs at a later in a collective book in Arabic and German.
